Our Mission

Colorado has a long history as a leader in developing and implementing ground-breaking progressive policy, but as the state’s leaders continue to build on this progressive tradition, they also face unique challenges that range from the state’s TABOR amendment to its rapid growth.

The Mountaineer is designed to act as a consistent, flexible, and responsive tool to help inform the unique political and policy debates in Colorado. By conducting methodologically sound research and providing reliable guidance to inform allies, elected leaders, and the press, The Mountaineer will help progressive leaders and communicators shape the debate on the issues that matter most to Coloradans.

Andrew baumann

Andrew Baumann is an experienced strategist and pollster who provides insightful research and actionable, strategic recommendations for political campaigns, issue advocacy groups, and foundations. He is also one of the conservation community’s leading pollsters. Over the past decade and a half, Andrew has helped elect or re-elect Senators John Hickenlooper, Jacky Rosen, Catherine Cortez Masto, Jon Tester, Michael Bennet, Tom Udall, Gary Peters, Debbie Stabenow, and Tammy Baldwin. Andrew has also played a significant role in helping move Colorado in a decidedly blue direction over the past few cycles. He advised Senate Majority PAC in their successful efforts to defeat Cory Gardner in 2020 and, in 2018, he advised Congressman Jason Crow in his 11-point victory in CO-6 over Mike Coffman - who Colorado pundits had labeled as “unbeatable” after his 2016 victory. In addition to his political work, Andrew has also worked for numerous advocacy groups with a particular focus on climate, clean energy and conservation issues, having worked with LCV, Environmental Defense Fund, Climate Power 2020, the Sierra Club, and many others. His work in 2020 was instrumental in helping convince Joe Biden to make climate a centerpiece of his campaign and embrace a more ambitious climate plan.

Nicole Jaconetty

Nicole Jaconetty is a consultant on Global Strategy Group’s research team where she manages survey research projects for candidates for political office and progressive advocacy organizations. She has developed her expertise in Colorado politics as a core member of the Mountaineer team since its inception in early 2020. She also works with Democratic clients across the country – particularly in West Virginia, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and throughout the entire Midwest – to help campaigns and causes understand their electorates, hone messaging, and persuade voters. In addition to her electoral work, Nicole guides environmental organizations such as Conservation Colorado, Western Resource Advocates, and the Environmental Defense Fund on how to talk about issues like climate change, clean energy, and carbon emissions.

sara Loflin

ProgressNow Colorado Executive Director Sara Loflin has spent over 18 years working at every level of political organizing in Colorado, from candidate and ballot initiative campaigns to community organizing. Prior to taking the reins at ProgressNow Colorado, Loflin served as the Executive Director of the League of Oil and Gas Impacted Coloradans (LOGIC) from September of 2015. Loflin previously served as State Director for the environmental advocacy organization Clean Water Action, Program Manager at the Western Conservation Foundation, Field Director for America Votes, and served on the staff of the Colorado State Senate as Outreach Director.

Following the successful effort to defeat of Amendment 74 in 2018, Loflin played a central role in the passage of Senate Bill 19-181: landmark legislation reforming the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission’s (COGCC) mission to prioritize public health and safety over “fostering” development of the fossil fuel industry. Loflin subsequently worked directly with the COGCC on a proposal to increase setbacks between oil and gas drilling and neighborhoods up to 2,000 feet.

Loflin was elected in April of 2020 to serve on the Erie, Colorado Board of Trustees, where she is directly involved with policymaking at the interface between suburban growth and fossil fuel production. Loflin has led Erie in focusing on equity issues: working with the community to develop a police task force, diversity, equity and inclusion training for the town, and the creation of a DEI advisory board.

Loflin's theory of political change focuses on meeting people where they are over angry rhetoric, and intervening in difficult negotiations to find a viable path forward that upholds progressive values.

In her spare time, Sara enjoys running, hiking, cooking, and hanging out with her dogs and family.
